How to Control Your Diabetes
A person with diabetes will have trouble with the way his digested food uses glucose to provide energy and growth. Our bodies use glucose, a form of sugar which our digestive system has broken down from the food we eat, which is then transported around the body via the bloodstream. As glucose is the fuel our body needs to survive it is imperative that it is able to be transported by the blood without any problems, something which diabetes stops. The health risks are the direct result of a build up of glucose in the blood instead of it being carried around the body for the cells to have energy.
Two main types occur; information on both is looked at briefly here. The first type is called type one and primarily affects young people, usually called juvenile onset diabetes and is where the body completely stops the production of insulin; affected individuals or diabetics must take insulin daily to survive. Without insulin the glucose cannot be used by the body to be converted into energy. The second form of diabetes usually affects people when they are of mature years; the body is still producing insulin but there is a problem with its production or use, but fortunately this type can be treated with a special diet.
Those energy foods which we all need to live are potatoes, pasta, rice, bread and fruit of course. High blood glucose levels over a long period of time can cause kidney problems, blindness, heart disease, and lead to amputations. The importance of managing your diabetes condition cannot be underestimated and with a disciplined approached these serious conditions can be improved; some of the possible conditions will be halted completely whilst others will be delayed. Care of your condition relies on you maintaining certain aspects and any prescribed medication must be taken routinely; but this means sticking to your medication, watching your blood sugar, cholesterol and stopping smoking!
In addition, weight and blood pressure will need to be routinely monitored and kept stable. Diabetes once recognized in the sufferer will be with them for the rest of their lives; the USA is particularly badly hit with over 5.5 million sufferers. However, the disease remains undiagnosed in about the same number; each year there are over six hundred thousand new cases. Official figures show that diabetes causes the death of over thirty four thousand people in America every year but deaths from citizens that have the condition but do not die directly from it is about 320,000.
