Frying pan not just for pancakes!

Roasting coffee in a frying pan

It’s pretty simple. The disadvantage of this method is that you run a higher risk of burning your coffee beans so you will need to remain very vigilant.

You’ll need a frying pan, a wooden spoon specifically for stiring roasted coffee beans unless you want your beans tasting like pancakes which could be a good thing in passing I like pancakes very much, and a metal colander or some sort of cooling tray.

Things to remember:

* The coffee beans will shed their skin, called chaff, this will make a mess so best to cool the beans outside by a window or by the sink.
* Roasting beans produces smoke so make sure you can vent it properly, again roast your beans outside or by a window.
* Stirring the beans continuously prevents them from scorching and from roasting unevenly.
* A fast air current permits to roast the beans at a lower temperature. This is not the case when roasting with a frying pan.

Heres the procedure:

1. Place your green coffee beans inside the frying pan and put it on the heat at 370 F to 540 %b0%b0F / 188 to 282 C. You’ll need more heat that with the popcorn popper as there is no fast air current.
2. Stir the beans continuously with your wooden spoon to prevent them from burning at the bottom. Just pretend your cooking poridge.
3. Keep an eye out for the signals: changing color of the beans they will become darker and darker and the 2 CRACK sounds you’ll hear during roasting. Roast your beans as light or as dark as you like. Refer to our article on Roasting below.
4. Place the roasted coffee beans in the colander and stir them to cool them down quick and prevent them from over-roasting! The beans must be cooled down promptly!

Guys we’d really like to see some pictures of your roasted beans!
